Entry requirements. Entry requirements are general for all public Spanish universities. In general terms, the studies of psychology have numerus clausus in all the universities except the Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia (Spanish Open University). Preference is given according to the ranking of the mark obtained in secondary studies averaged with that obtained in a general exam carried out by the University or group of universities of the same Autonomous Region.

The degree structure. The structure of formal higher education has been regulated by the Ministry of Education by law. The general framework for higher education has been established in this law. In addition every official title included in the Official Register of Titles is regulated by Decree of the Ministry of Education and in it the core commonalities for all the Universities of the State are established.

Education is organised in two cycles: the 1st cycle (2 or 3 years), 2nd. Cycle (2 years).

Minimal teaching load 300 credits (1 credit = 10 teaching hours). Maximum teaching load 360 credits. Minimum credits per cycle 120.

Teaching hours can be of theory or practice. The last ones have to be at least 40% and in every course at least 1/3 of the total teaching load.

In addition to this minimal structure other regulations also establish that in the design of the curriculum of every university courses can be of the following types:

COMMON CORE COURSES: are courses on topics that are included in the core contents compulsory for all Spanish Universities teaching the Licenciatura en Psicología. Minimum number of credits is established in the Decree (see next paragraph).

UNIVERSITY COMPULSORY COURSES: are courses that have to be studied by all students following the Psychology curriculum in a given University. The same courses can not be compulsory in other universities.

OPTIONAL COURSES: A certain number of courses are offered in the curriculum and the student can choose some of them. Minimal optional credits to be studied are 20% of the total of credits.

FREE CONFIGURATION COURSES: 10% of the total load of the curriculum (between 30 and 36 credits) can be studied among courses offered at the University within the curricula of other studies (medicine, law, economics, social work, etc.).

ECTS The new university education system in Spain is organised by credits, usually 60 credits per academic year. One credit represents 10 teaching hours. Thus, it is really easy to convert Spanish credits in ECTS with the equivalence 1 to 1.

Examinations. Examinations are taken after every course usually in written form. Essays and written reports are also used. For professional skills there are practical examinations and students are required to write a report about the practical period or stage (practicum) that is evaluated by the professional that is acting as supervisor and the tutor from the university department.
