STRUCTURE OF FORMAL EDUCATION - NORWAY

The full psychology degree is offered at the universities of Oslo, Bergen, Tromsø, Trondheim

Entry requirements

The degree structure. The structure of the education is according to the standards for the Norwegian Cand. Psychol. degree which is agreed upon by the university training programmes and the board (Psykologrådet) advising the government and the Norwegian Psychological Association. The general outline is that it takes one and a half years for an introductory programme. Then two and a half years for topics on science, methods of psychology and related fields like sociology, physiology and psychiatry and then the last two and a half years with practice oriented education and supervised practice in various fields of applied psychology.

The Norwegian psychology degree is generic, which means that there is little specialist education and training inside the university programmes. Since early 1960 there has been a specialization programme taking at least five years of practice, supervision and courses and a written paper to become a specialist in the various fields of applied psychology.

There are several types of examinations used for the formal education. These are written exams taking several hours, papers to be produced during a couple of weeks and a dissertation. In addition to this there is oral discussion by the examination panel at main points during the total programme. The practice periods during the formal education training programmes have to be accepted by the supervisors.

All of the four universities follow the same general outline, while there are some differences among the four universities as to how their programmes are structured. For instance, the University of Tromsø has built the structure so that the main fields of psychology (like perception and learning and personality and the biological bases of psychology) are given both as a science, results, methods and practice oriented approach every year for one year each. How much focus there will be on the practice of psychologists during the total programmes differ somewhat from one university to the other. All the universities have mandatory practice during the last two and a half year of the total programme.
