STRUCTURE OF FORMAL EDUCATION - GREECE
The full psychology degree is offered at the University of
Crete, University of Athens, the Aristotle University of
Thessalonike, and the Panteion University.
Entry requirements to university are based on national
examinations. In the new system put into effect in 1999,
entrance to the study of choice is based on marks and
nationwide general examinations during the last two years of
secondary school. There is a numerus clausus for each
department of psychology.
Entry into postgraduate graduate programs is open to holders
of the Ptychion degree, and is based on undergraduate grades, a
written examination in psychology, interviews, knowledge of a
foreign language, and research and applied psychology
experience. The number of accepted candidates is limited to
between 5 to 25 graduate students per program, depending on the
university. These graduate programs are two to three years in
duration, including supervised practical training and a thesis.
Entry into a specialised postgraduate programs affords the
opportunity for continuing for the Ph.D. after writing a
dissertation.
The degree structure. The psychology programs in Greece can
be classified, employing the model of Newstead and Makinen
(1997), as "Discontinuous specialist".
The training for the Ptychion (Bachelors) is four years and
generic in that the undergraduate degree is in psychology
without specialization, although the student can major, with
the electives, in specific areas, e.g., developmental
psychology, cognitive psychology, personality, social
psychology, methodology, by taking more courses in one of these
areas, based on his/her interests or intentions regarding
postgraduate studies. In addition to course work, the student
must take two semesters of supervised practical training and
write a thesis.
Specialised training at the postgraduate level
(Metaptychiako Diploma - Masters degree) is between two to
three years, depending on the specialisation. Clinical
psychology is three years, school psychology and organisational
psychology are two years. The program in
Clinical Psychology at the University of Athens requires 5
semesters of seminars, in addition to internships each semester
and a one year internship at the end of course work, for a
total of 2,000 hours of placement at a mental health centre
under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist.
Postgraduate students enrolled in the Masters degree program
have the opportunity for continuing for the Ph.D. (Didaktoriko
Diploma), which requires a minimum of three years. In addition
Ptychion graduates can apply for the Ph.D. by research in areas
of psychology not covered by the organised programs.
ECTS
Undergraduate programs leading to a degree in psychology in
Greece aresimilar at the four universities. The four
departments of psychology meet periodically on an informal
basis during which they discuss the programs, curricula, etc.
This has lead to the establishment of general criteria such as,
core courses in psychology, practicum training, senior theses,
etc.
Basic requirements
The programs require four years (eight semesters) of
residence, and a total of approximately 180 credit hours: 160
credit hours in course work (approximately forty courses), in
addition to a senior thesis (10 credit hours) and placement (10
credit hours) leading to the degree titled Ptychion. Credit
hours refer to the number of teaching hours per week in 14 week
semester, i.e., a 3 credit hour course meets 3 hours per week
for 14 weeks. One credit hour also refers to a certain number
of hours per week in practical training during a 14 week
semester, and to contact hours for the Senior thesis. During
the senior year, the student is required to complete 120 hours
of placement (60 each semester) at least two applied psychology
centres, e.g, a mental health centre, a school counselling
centre, an organisation, etc., under the supervision of the
local psychologist. The student must complete a report
evaluating his/her activities in the placement centre.
The student is required to write a senior thesis during the
last three semesters of residence. The senior thesis is
conducted under the supervision of a faculty committee of three
and must be empirical in nature. The goal of the exercise is to
demonstrate the student's competence in planning, conducting,
and writing a scientific paper in psychology.
Examinations. Written examinations of three hours duration
for each course are held three times a year: After the fall
semester (January-February); after the spring semester (June);
before the fall semester (September).
