FORMAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS - NORWAY
The title. The formal qualification requirement for practice
as a psychologist is to have graduated from one of the four
Norwegian universities with a degree of Cand. Psychol.
(Candidate of Psychology). An individual with that degree or a
comparable degree from a university programme in another
country, has to apply to the Ministry of Social and Health
Affairs (Sosial- og Helsedepartementet) presenting the degree
and a statement of good standing (vandelsattest) with the
police authorities. After the Cand. Psychol. degree there is no
need for additional training or supervision before being given
the title of psychologist. The law regulating this is a title
law regulating the title of psychologist.
The education and training for psychologists in Norway
follows 'the generalist scientist practitioner model'; after
graduating and being given the title of psychologist, you are
permitted to work in any field of applied psychology either in
the community or at a university.
The law. There has been a specific law since 1973 which
regulates the title of psychologist and some of the practices.
At the same time there have been laws regulating medical
doctors and physiotherapists and nurses etc. During, or in the
first six months of 1999 there will be a new national law
regulating all the health professions. It will be a title
oriented and to a lesser degree a practice oriented law. These
authorization laws will make it a legal offence to use the
titles without permission from the health authorities.
