A European Framework for Psychologists' Training

Project carried out with the support of the European Community within the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci Programme

FORMAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS - ITALY

The title. The formal qualification requirements for practice as a psychologist are as follows: a degree in psychology (5 years); Tirocinio (training under supervision) (one year); State examination; Membership in the professional body of licensed psychologists (The Ordine).

(For psychotherapy a 4-year school of specialisation after the degree in psychology or in medicine is required)

The law. The legal basis of practice. The degree has "legal value". The state examination is taken at the University (Committee composed by 3 University professors and 2 Professional psychologists). If the examination is successful the Ordine (professional register) becomes the "certifying agency".

The profession of psychology is regulated by law (mainly by Law 18.02.1989, n.56: Ordinamento della professione di psicologo)

Further specialist education and training. There are no differential requirements except for Psychotherapy.
