FORMAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS - DENMARK

The title. The title "Autoriseret Psykolog" ("Authorised Psychologist") is the qualification required to practice as a fully recognised professional psychologist in Denmark. In order to obtain certification as a psychologist the applicant is re-quired to have a cand. psych, or cand. paed. (psych) (see section B) and to have completed at least 2 years' full time work as a psychologist and at least 160 hours of professional supervision with respect to his or her own cases. The applicant must also document a certain diversification in his or her practical education.

The law. Under the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Danish Supervisory Board of Psychological Practice (Psykolog-nævnet) is appointed by law to certify psychologists, defined as a person who has graduated as a psychologist or as a psychologist/educationalist , or who has obtained an equivalent degree . The law entitles only those who have graduated with a degree in psychology from a university or other IHE or who has an equivalent degree to use the title psychologist.

The authorisation has not had the expected impact on the employment market in all areas. The area of work, personnel selection and organisational psychology in both the private and public sector has not yet adopted the authorisation.

Further Specialist Education.

Further education or education to specialist level requires 3 years of further practice and training. At the present time there are further education routes in the following areas:

  • Clinical psychology
  • Child psychology
  • School psychology
  • Neuropsychology
  • Child neuropsychology
  • Gerontopsychology
  • Health psychology

When the psychologist has been recognised as specialist he or she can qualify further by becoming a supervisor.

Research. The area of research has its own qualification route through the PhD study. In order to obtain this title one has to be employed as a PhD candidate for at least 3 years. This title is only obtainable if one already has the Master's degree in psychology. The PhD candidate has to do teaching, courses and independent study in order to obtain the degree. The degree is publicly defended.
